Starch Indicator

Starch indicator is made with iodine as the main ingrediant. A chemical test for starch is to add starch indicator (iodine solution) to a small amount of your wash / wort and look for a colour change. In the presence of starch, starch indicator solution turns a blue/black colour. It is possible to distinguish starch from glucose (and other carbohydrates) using this iodine solution test.

How can we detect the presence of starch?
We can easily test if a liquid contains starch.
  1. Collect small quantity of the liquid to be tested, generally you dont need more than about 15ml.
  2. Put 1-2 drops of starch indicator solution in it.
  3. Swirl it to mix it in gently
  4. Blue-black colour indicates the presence of starch in the tested and conversion has failed
